Curbless Showers

Curbless showers are not just trendy, they’re and incredibly practical part of designing accessible bathrooms. They offer a seamless path into and out of the shower, eliminating common tripping hazards and making showers accessible.

When designing a curbless shower, there are a few key features to keep in mind. Of course, you’re going to want to eliminate any step or curb from the design (hence the name). This will increase access for people with disabilities where wheelchairs are needed. We also recommend choosing slip-resistant flooring to help reduce any fall risks and prolong independent living. 

Proper drainage is essential. We achieve this with a gentle slope to prevent any water buildup as well as strategic showerhead placement. Additionally, we recommend enclosing the space in glass to control the water spray while maintaining the open feel of the style. Another helpful addition is a grab bar or seating option. These can increase both stability and comfort. 

Wide Doorways

Most residential doorways range from 28 to 32 inches, but an accessible wide doorway is at least 36 inches. Expanding doorways improves mobility and creates a spacious feel, and can often increase natural lighting and openness. It also makes sure all people have equal access to spaces! However, this can come with a few design specifications you won’t want to overlook:

• Structural support: Widening doorways may require additional framing.
• Trim and finishes: Adjust trim and casing for design continuity.
• Flooring transitions: This may require updates to maintain a seamless flow.

Step-Free Entries

Step-free entries in your home are essential to accessible design (and look amazing). You can do this through gently sloped walkways that blend naturally with the yard, decorative paths made of pavers, stamped concrete, or stone for an elegant approach. We also recommend flush thresholds to create smooth transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces!

Additionally, extended porches and overhangs add charm while providing protection from the elements. Integrated railings and planters also pull double duty, ensuring safety and accessibility for people while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
