Transforming a Multi-Generational Home in Minnetonka
Date: August 13, 2024The Martinson Project in Minnetonka, Minnesota showcases the beauty of multi-generational living! This project, completed in the Winter of 2024, is the perfect blend of harmony and functionality you want to create in any multi-generational home.
About this Multi-Generational Home
When this gifted family of pianists relocated to Minnesota, they were looking for a home that would provide both plenty of private spaces so necessary in multigenerational living and yet enough shared spaces for their dual-generation household to get all the benefits of living with extended family.
Recognizing the importance of aging-in-place, the family prioritized living arrangements with long-term comfortable living spaces and accessibility. They also wanted to make sure they could teach music and host professional concerts.
Our team was excited to take on the challenge!
What Brought This Client to Us?
The Martinson family chose us for our expertise in aging-in-place design and our experience with custom multi-generational home remodels. They needed a partner who understood their unique needs and could transform their multi-gen home vision into reality, and we were ready to be just that!
Making it All Work
This comprehensive remodel touched every part of the home, including new windows throughout, completely remodeled kitchen and bathrooms, Installing an elevator, and crafting a specialized concert space.
One of the biggest challenges was finding the perfect spot for the elevator. We needed it to be an accessible feature in a central enough location to fulfill its purpose of helping the family age in place without getting in the way of the main living spaces. We ended up using a closet and hallway across all three levels to install it with dual doors. This was a fun new experience for our team and we loved finding the perfect solution!
The concert space on the lower level also required specialized soundproofing and acoustics for practical reasons, so we collaborated with sound specialists to ensure perfection. We wanted the space to work perfectly for performances without disturbing anyone else in the multigenerational home. Making that all come together was a fun challenge but so rewarding, especially when we got treated to a private concert: the finished product in action!

A Fun Thank-You
One of the biggest highlights of this multigenerational housing project was the private concert the clients hosted for our company once it was finished! It was an extraordinary experience and a thoughtful expression of the family’s gratitude (and talent)!
Working with a family of four adult-generation decision-makers could have been complex, but the Martinsons made it easy with their clear vision and cooperation. The whole project was a delight and we’re so glad the family loves it! In their own words:
“This was essentially a whole-house remodel where we presented a myriad of idiosyncratic hopes and wishes. LCB’s approach to all of this was apparently, ‘Your every wish is our ambition.’ We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”
